We Need It: Truth

Biblical Truth is essential to our faith, but it is under continual attack. This devotion offers over 20 Scriptures.

Full text of Scriptures below the devotion.

1. God’s truth is always under attack, now more than ever.

Satan, the father of lies, denies, discredits, and distorts God's truth (John 8:44-45).

False teachers distort it (Acts 20:29-31).

Unbelievers suppress and deny it (Romans 1:18-19; 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12; Romans 1:25).

Some people claim to be Christians, but they're actually fakers without truth in their hearts (1 John 2:4; 1 John 1:8).

2. Truth is essential to our faith.

Salvation is believing and receiving God’s truth (Ephesians 1:3; 1 Timothy 2:3-4)

✔ The Body of Christ is “the pillar and foundation of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15).

✔ Truth guides us into godliness (Psalm 25:5; Titus 1:1).

We must worship in spirit and truth (John 4:22-24).

Truth sets us free to walk closely with the Lord (John 8:31-32).

3. Genuine believers highly value God's truth.

We “buy” truth: pursue it, make it a priority, support it (Proverbs 23:23; 2 Corinthians 13:8).

We don't distort the truth but set it forth plainly (2 Corinthians 4:2).

We speak the truth in love 💙 (Ephesians 4:15).

We live in the light of God’s truth and obey it (Ephesians 5:8-9; 1 Peter 1:22).

We do our best to handle it correctly (2 Timothy 2:15).

Therefore, dear Christian, stand firm “with the belt of truth buckled around your waist” (Ephesians 6:14).

💙Beyond 1-minute for those who want more:

Why not go through the verses below and the linked devotions during your quiet time next week, asking God to give you a firm foundation in His truth!

Christians are facing strong opposition, and we need to understand the importance of holding tightly to God's truth as presented in Scripture.

Biblical Truth is essential to our faith, but it is under continual attack. This devotion offers over 20 Scriptures.

1.
God’s truth is always under attack.

See Wilderness Wanderers and When People Reject Inerrancy of Scripture.

John 8:44-45: "You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me!"

Acts 20:29-31: "I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears."

Romans 1:18-19: "The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them."

2 Thessalonians 2:10-12: "They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness."

Romans 1:25: "They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen."

1 John 2:4: "Whoever says, 'I know him,' but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person."

1 John 1:8: "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us."

2. Truth is essential to our faith.

See Without the Bible, We're Lost and Let's Be Among the Readers.

Ephesians 1:13: "And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation."

1 Timothy 2:3-4: "God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth."

1 Timothy 3:15: "if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God's household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth."

Psalm 25:5: "Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long."

Titus 1:1: "Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ to further the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness—"

John 4:22-24: "You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth."

John 8:31-32: "To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, 'If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'"

3. Genuine believers highly value God's truth.

See Truth with Love, Love with Truth.

Proverbs 23:23: "Buy the truth and do not sell it-- wisdom, instruction and insight as well."

2 Corinthians 13:8: "For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth."

2 Corinthians 4:2: "Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God."

Ephesians 4:15: "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ."

Ephesians 5:8-9: "For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)"

1 Peter 1:22: "Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart."

2 Timothy 2:15: "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth."

Truth with Love, Love with Truth

It's so important that we understand what it means to speak the truth in love. It's an essential part of our maturity in Christ. #BibleLoveNotes #Bible #Devotions

We desperately need God’s truth in a world filled with misinformation, false advertising, and half-truths.

When we come to Christ, we learn that He alone is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). He brings us both “grace and truth(John 1:17).

Truth without love is damaging: We should never present biblical truths with sarcasm, mockery, or rudeness, and we should never fail to talk about God's forgiveness and grace.

“Love” without truth is damaging: It keeps men enslaved to sin instead of setting them free (John 8:32). It’s not really love at all because genuine love can't be separated from truth.

Whether talking to believers or unbelievers, we should share the “salt” of God’s truth in gracious, wholesome, effective ways (Colossians 4:6; Ephesians 4:29).

This will benefit others, and it will benefit us because “speaking the truth in love” helps us become more Christlike (Ephesians 4:15).

Agape Probably Doesn't Mean What You've Been Taught in Bible Study

For many years, an error has been taught about the Greek word Agape.

It's important that we share our faith accurately, honestly, and biblically (2 Timothy 2:15). Sadly, there are some very popular misunderstandings about God's love.

I've written at length about the misleading use of the word “unconditional” when describing God's love (see links below). It has produced enormous misunderstandings.

Today I want to take a bit longer than my usual one-minute devotion to address another error that is often combined with “unconditional love” misunderstandings.

Why am I discussing these errors? Because there's nothing more important than sharing our faith accurately, and we need to be aware of how widespread some errors have become.

So let's look at the popular misunderstanding of the Greek word agape.

If you google “agape,” the majority of Christian sites will present it as God's perfect love, and many will claim that it also denotes unconditional love.

John Piper summarizes the problem:
“One of the most popular linguistic and exegetical fallacies in modern times is that the Greek word for love, agapao, carries in it the implication of a divine love that is unconditional and comes to us in spite of our sin. That is not true. Context must decide if agapao refers to our proud, cliquish love for our cronies (as in Matthew 5:46), or if it refers to God’s merciful and sacrificial love for sinners (as in John 3:16), or if it refers to our love for leaders, not unconditionally but precisely because of their labor (1 Thessalonians 5:13). ~ John Piper

In English, the meaning of “love” is also defined by the context. We use the word love whether we're talking about loving pizza or loving God.

If Christians are sharing God's love with good intentions, does it really matter if we pass along this error about the Greek word agape? I think it does. We don't need to misrepresent a Greek word to emphasize the beauty of God's love.

We should “always be prepared” to explain our faith to others (1 Peter 3:15), and we should seek to do it honestly and accurately (2 Timothy 2:15). If we are going to emphasize a point by explaining the meaning of the original Greek word, let's do our homework. Our faith is worth more than sloppy scholarship.

When we teach errors, we can lose our credibility, especially when sharing the gospel with unbelievers. So let's be like the noble Bereans and make sure Scripture supports the things we're taught (Acts 17:11).

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15).

God's love is incredible (Ephesians 3:17-19)We don't need to redefine Greek words to prove that.

💙
Thomas Nelson’s Bible Dictionary:
AGAPE [ah GAH pay] — a Greek word for love used often in the New Testament (John 13:35; 1 Cor. 13; 1 John 4:7–18). Contrary to popular understanding, the significance of agape is not that it is an unconditional love, but that it is primarily a love of the will rather than the emotions. The New Testament never speaks of God loving unbelieving human beings with emotional love or a love that expects something in return. But He loves with His will (John 3:16; Rom. 5:8). The reason for this is that God can find nothing enjoyable about a sinner on whom His wrath still abides. So He loves by His will; it is His nature to love. [underlining is mine] *
 💙
The word agape did not originate in New Testament writings. To believe that agape means God's perfect love would mean the pagan Greeks developed the best description of God's love.
💙
“Both agape and phileo can be used as synonyms, and it is the usage in the context of conversation or narration that tells us the degree of love or the object of love in focus.” ~ Let's Stop Overinterpreting Agape
💙
“In John 3:35, Jesus says, 'The Father loves the Son,' and in John 5:20 he says precisely the same thing—only in one verse he uses agapao and in the other phileo, with no discernible difference in meaning.
💙
“In Matthew 24:12, agape is described as growing cold. Yet if it is a Godly love, how can it change? … Agape was used throughout other Greek literature of the time and when the New Testament was written, it had become the standard word for love in the Greek culture. We should therefore expect it to be the standard word for love in the New Testament.”  ~ Is “Agape” a special kind of love?

Agape is used to speak of God’s love that He has for the world and that Christians are supposed to emulate. This is the word for 'love' that is most commonly used in the New Testament. For a while it was thought that Christians must have coined the word agape to speak of a godly kind of love that the Greek world knew nothing of. But the word agape was in fact in use in the Roman Empire, and it was not coined by Christians to communicate God’s love.” ~ Got Questions

Balanced Presentations of the Gospel Are Losing Ground

We need to find churches, Bible studies, and fellowship groups that are willing to speak both truth and grace.

Christian teachings that present both grace and truth will never be as popular as half-truth presentations that share grace alone.

My book Wisdom for Life contains devotions based on Psalms and Proverbs. I knew it would be more popular if I avoided passages that addressed issues like abortion, immoral lifestyles, and evolution. But I decided if God wanted them included in Psalms and Proverbs, He'd want them included in a few of my devotions along with the many passages about His wonderful grace and love. (See note.)

It's confusing and deceptive to address grace and love without addressing sin and repentance. That's one reason we have Side A, B, and Y Christians bending to culture.

Scripture never sugarcoats sin. It tells us that God hates sin because it damages people's hearts and souls and separates them from His love and salvation

We must have a biblical understanding of the illogical, unethical, abusive lies promoted in our world.

When Paul wrote his strong rebuke of homosexuality in Romans 1:16-32, Greek and Roman cultures fully accepted gay lifestyles, one of many signs that they were on the decline. But Paul didn't let culture define his sermons because he was speaking for God, not man. And that's why he began with this statement:

“I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.”

What Genuine Faith Looks Like

This short devotion offers some important elements of genuine belief in Christ. And it encourages us to examine our faith.

A major test of faith—the thing that reveals if we genuinely know Christ or simply know about Him—is our willingness to stand firm even if we're insulted.

Inside and outside the church, Christians are being told that loving people means keeping silent about God's strong warnings against culturally acceptable sins.

If getting along with culture was our goal, Christ would never have said:

"Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you." Matthew 5:11-12

Many pastors and teachers are sugarcoating unpopular biblical teachings or avoiding them altogether. If that was our goal, Christ would never have said:

"If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels." Mark 8:38

Genuine believers test everything with God's Word because "the Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons." 1 Timothy 4:1

And if we doubt the importance of these things, Scripture gives us this charge:

"Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?" 2 Corinthians 13:5

✜✜✜

God calls us to speak the truth in love, not in anger or self-righteousness (Ephesians 4:15; 2 Timothy 2:24-26). But speaking the truth in love means we must know the truth. As we study Scripture during our daily quiet time and study in groups with good Bible teachers, we understand God's values and we develop discernment so we can accept what is true and reject what is false.

See I Am not Ashamed of the Gospel and Truth with Love, Love with Truth.

Trendy Apostasy: Marty Sampson

August 2019: It's become trendy to proclaim apostasy.

A thoughtful answer to Hillsong's Marty Sampson's announcement about losing his Christian faith. #MartySampson #Josh Harris #LosingFaith #Exvangelicals #BibleLoveNotes #Bible #TrendyApostasy

Forty-year-old Marty Sampson has been writing, singing, and producing worship music for the last twenty years. Earlier this month he wrote an Instagram post announcing he’d lost his faith and felt wonderful about it. (source)

A few days later, he made a second announcement explaining that he hadn’t renounced his faith, but it was "on incredibly shaky ground." (source)

I pray Sampson will find the Lord, but I’d like to address some of the arguments he made in his first Instagram post to help others who may have similar questions.

I’ve interspersed my comments (in italics) with Sampson's Instagram statement.

Addressing Sampson's comments about fallen pastors. #MartySampson #TrendyApostasy

Sampson: Time for some real talk. I’m genuinely losing my faith, and it doesn’t bother me. Like, what bothers me now is nothing. I am so happy now, so at peace with the world. It’s crazy. This is a soapbox moment so here I go … How many preachers fall? Many. No one talks about it.

My response
Perhaps Sampson's disillusionment in this area is due to the fact that Hillsong's founding pastor Brian Houston failed to report his father's sexual abuse to the police (source).

Christians who don’t practice what they preach are a serious disappointment. But the church will always have hypocrites and failures, partly because God isn’t finished with us and partly because there are false believers in our churches (Philippians 1:6; Matthew 13:24-30).

But Sampson won't find fewer sinners and hypocrites outside Christianity.

Addressing Sampson's disappointment in miracles #MartySampson #TrendyApostasy

Sampson: How many miracles happen. Not many. No one talks about it.

My response:
Hillsong (where Sampson has served as a worship leader) is a "word-of-faith" church, promising healing and miracles if congregants follow certain principles. This probably contributes to Sampson's disillusionment because word-of-faith teachings don't prove true.

God's forgiveness, grace, comfort, guidance, and redemption are miracles. Sometimes God heals and performs other miracles, but we are unreasonable to demand these signs (Matthew 12:38-40).

Addressing Sampson's claim that the Bible has contradictions #MartySampson #TrendyApostasy

Sampson: Why is the Bible full of contradictions? No one talks about it.

My response:
If Sampson feels the Bible is full of contradictions, he hasn’t studied it well and he hasn’t sought available resources from Bible scholars. This is a major problem in the church: expecting easy answers, neglecting personal Bible study, and giving up without trying.

And who isn’t talking about it? The Bible has been challenged throughout history and it always proves itself credible.

Addressing Sampson's comments about hell. #MartySampson #TrendyApostasy

Sampson: How can God be love yet send four billion people to a place, all ‘coz they don’t believe? No one talks about it.

My response:
It sounds like Sampson considers unbelief insignificant. Does he think a loving God should fill heaven with people who reject Him?

None of us deserves heaven (Romans 6:23).

God's plans include things our finite minds cannot understand (1 Corinthians 13:12). But we can trust that His ways are perfect (Psalm 18:30).

If we read the Bible from cover to cover, we’ll be amazed at how many chances God gives men and nations before destroying them, and the same is true regarding hell.

Addressing Sampson's comments about judgmental people. #MartySampson #TrendyApostasy

Sampson: Christians can be the most judgmental people on the planet—they can also be some of the most beautiful and loving people. But it’s not for me.

My response:
I’m glad Sampson doesn’t lump all Christians into one category, and surely he knows he will find just as many judgmental people outside the church. I've dealt with a great many rude, judgmental atheists on social media.

Addressing Sampson's claims about genuine truth. #MartySampson #TrendyApostasy

Sampson: I am not in any more. I want genuine truth. Not the “I just believe it” kind of truth.

My response:
I am reminded of Jesus standing before Pilate in John 18. Jesus explained: The reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” And Pilate retorted: “What is truth?”

Genuine truth isn't based on feelings, opinions, or scientific theories. Truth stands in front of Sampson every time he reads Scripture. He can believe it or turn Jesus over to be crucified again (Hebrews 6:4-8).

I suppose God could have given us more proof:

He could have appeared to us in bodily form to get our attention...Oh, yes, He did that!

He could have left us a book of His words that has more validity than any other ancient document…Oh, yes, He did that!

He could have changed the hearts and lives of millions of men and women throughout history, sustaining them in hardship and bringing them peace and joy…Oh, yes He did that!

God's truth is evident to anyone who genuinely seeks it (Jeremiah 29:13; Matthew 7:8).

Addressing Sampson's claim about scientific evidence disproving Christianity. #MartySampson #TrendyApostasy

Sampson: Science keeps piercing the truth of every religion.

My response:
If you say something often enough, people begin to believe it whether it's true or not. This is one such statement, a common atheistic argument that is not based on scientific fact or scientific method.

Science never has and never will disprove Christianity. Quite the contrary. Science confirms the divine nature of God. People who reject that truth are without excuse (Romans 1:20).

Addressing Sampson's point about the purpose of religion #MartySampson #TrendyApostasy

Sampson: Lots of things help people change their lives, not just one version of God. Got so much more to say, but for me, I keeping it real.[sic]

My response:
Christianity isn’t a self-help program. It’s an answer to the problem of sin, the only way we can be saved from eternal death. Anything less is like putting a band-aid on cancer.

Addressing Sampson's comment about living for himself #MartySampson #TrendyApostasy

Sampson: Unfollow if you want, I’ve never been about living my life for others.

My response:
This is an interesting statement from a man who spent the past 20 years deeply involved in worship for a God he doesn't know.

Sampson claims he wasn't trying to influence anyone with his Instagram statement (source). However, after Josh Harris' publicity a few weeks earlier, he had to know it would bring him great attention.

Fellow musician John Cooper wrote a fitting rebuke (source).

Sampson's claim that Sampson's claim addressed: Christianity is like every other religion #MartySampson #TrendyApostasy

Sampson: All I know is what’s true to me right now, and Christianity just seems to me like another religion at this point. I could go on, but I won’t. Love and forgive absolutely. Be kind absolutely. Be generous and do good to others absolutely. Some things are good no matter what you believe. Let the rain fall, the sun will come up tomorrow.

My response:
If Sampson thinks Christianity is just like any other religion, he has neither studied Christianity nor any other religion.

Christianity is the only faith that adequately explains the cause and solution to mankind’s sin problem. Christianity is the only faith that offers forgiveness based on belief, not works.

If Sampson continues to judge Christianity by fallen pastors, difficult questions, personal feelings, and popular opinions, he'll arrive at the same conclusions as Josh Harris

If he judges Christianity by the person of Christ and the teachings of Scripture, he'll know the true meaning of love, faith, and truth.
