In the 1800s Anna Warner wrote a poem that her sister Susan included in one of her popular Christian novels. William Bradbury discovered the poem, added a refrain, and put it to music.
The first two lines of the poem are perhaps the most well known of any Christian hymn:
Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so.
In some ways, these two sentences summarize Christian theology, pointing first to the redemptive love of our Savior and secondly to the importance of God's Word as the source of truth about Him. These truths are easy enough for a child to understand, but accurate enough for a theologian to fully embrace.
Take a look at the entire poem and song:
Jesus loves me—this I know, For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong; They are weak, but He is strong.
Refrain:Yes, Jesus loves me!Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!The Bible tells me so.
Often the first verse is the only one that is sung, but below are the lyrics for all 4 verses:
Verse 2:Jesus loves me! He who died, Heaven's gate to open wide;
He will wash away my sin, Let His little child come in.
Verse 3 is not as well-known. As explained, it was originally written for a novel and the novel was about a sick child.
Verse 3: Jesus loves me! Loves me still,Though I'm very weak and ill;
From His shining throne on high, Comes to watch me where I lie.
Verse 4:Jesus loves me! He will stay Close beside me all the way;
If I love Him, when I die He will take me home on high.
