Misery Loves Company

This 1-minute devotion ponders the reasons that Atheists are so eager to convert people to their unbelief.

Since I've been sharing Bible Love Notes devotions on Pinterest, I've discovered that some atheists are especially bothered by posts about creation

I always try to respond courteously, but invariably I'm met with insults about my intelligence.

I understand why Christians are evangelistic: we believe people waste their lives here on earth and spend eternity in hell if they don't know Christ.

But I'm always confused by these evangelistic atheists. What purpose do they have in trying to convince us there's no God? Why do they care that we have faith?

We believe in an all-knowing, all-loving, all-wise Creator God. But they want us to believe we're mere accidents of nature.

We believe we'll spend eternity in paradise with our Lord. But they want us to believe when life is over, it's over.

It seems as if "misery loves company." No wonder God's Word says:
"The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God.'" Psalm 14:1

  1. In what atheists believe, there would be no harm in us believing in God or anything else. Nope, it doesn't make sense.

  2. It is human nature for people who feel like they have been denied a voice to then try to suppress others once they've been "empowered". Praying that you will always access His provision as you are challenged in this way!

  3. I like the way you worded this,

"I understand why Christians are evangelistic: we believe people waste their lives here on earth and spend eternity in hell if they don't know Christ.
But why would atheists be evangelistic? So we can join them in their belief that we're accidents of nature without purpose, morals, or hope?".

    Great way of explaining it.

  4. It is always sad when readers reacts so forcefully. Why not have a normal discussion? Anyway, I am glad you are writing the way you do and I hope she keeps reading along.

  5. I've often wondered why many atheists seem to want to force others to lose hope and believe in...nothing. But, your title says it all, Gail: Misery Loves Company! But, maybe somewhere deep inside those atheists who are shouting the loudest are shouting because they want to be heard by God. Do you know what I mean? I pray that their hearts soften.

  6. Joan, I too hope they are crying out to God, to save them. But they don't need to shout. They don't need to say anything out loud, at all. God knows their thoughts. Whoever they are, I am praying they will open their hearts so the Holy Spirit can find his way in, and speak to them. God bless them.

  7. It is puzzling to say the least. Everytime I read a article about a atheist demanding a CROSS at a memorial site which has been there for many, many years...needs to come down..I think...cannot they just turn their heads and look elsewhere? Live and let live hardly applies to "evangelizing atheist."

  8. For the same reason people who have lots of $ only want to be friends with others who have lots of money....and people who drink only want to associate with others that drink, and that goes for any behavior that may make us different or be against what God wants. Being around others that agree with us or our lifestyle makes us feel justified. In other words we’re all still acting like children. “Well he did it first!”....

  9. I love your writing. Non-Christians are influenced by the unholy spirit(s) who lash out in anger and dare I say fear, that your words could lead others out of darkness. As in the book of Jude, we want to convince some that doubt, and snatch others from the fire...the opposition is demonic, not necessarily that ,isery lives company. We wrestle not against....Lord continue to bless you and your ministry, to His glory.
