Humility is an important aspect of effective prayer.

James 4:6-10:
But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the
proud but shows favor to the humble.” Submit yourselves, then, to God.
Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he
will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your
hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter
to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord,
and he will lift you up.

To see how the self-esteem movement encourages pride and frowns on humility, see You Think You're Awesome?
Humility is admitting we are children dependent on our heavenly Father.
Matthew 18:1-4:
At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven."
Sometimes we forget who gets credit, and the self-esteem movement encourages us to do that. See The Glory Is God's, Not Ours.
Humility is an important part of getting along with others.
Romans 12:16:
Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

Philippians 2:3-11:
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.

Best of all: humility draws us closer to the Lord.
Isaiah 57:15: This is what the high and exalted One says-- he who lives forever,

lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.”
