In Micah 6:8 God tells us three important elements of faith:
"The LORD has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God."
Today let's concentrate on humility. Our modern world is focused on self-esteem, not humility. But Christians should know better.
⮞ Would you like to be wiser?
"He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way." Psalm 25:9
⮞ Would you like God's favor?
"Has
not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?"
declares the LORD. "These are the ones I look on with favor: those who
are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word." Isaiah 66:2
⮞ Would you like to avoid humiliation?
⮞ God tells us the kind of self-image we each should have in Romans 12:3:
"For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of
yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with
sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each
of you."
We shouldn't run ourselves down nor build ourselves up. We should admit to our sins and weaknesses and acknowledge our strengths without bragging about them (Proverbs 27:2).
Because humility is so underestimated and even rejected by our culture, I've prepared a resource that can help us understand and reflect God's view: Over 30 Scriptures About Humility. It not only contains Bible passages, it also contains a number of 1-minute devotions about various aspects of humility. It will work well for individual or group study, giving a scriptural view of self-image.
