Are God's Commands "Too Hard"?

How we handle unpopular teachings in Scripture reveals whether our faith is genuine or not.

In John 6:35-71 Jesus tested the devotion of a large group of his followers by sharing hard truths. Most of them abandoned Him.

Many modern Christians are also abandoning Jesus, preaching a different Jesus than the Jesus of Scripture (2 Corinthians 11:4). They claim that a person can be saved and continue living an ungodly lifestyle.

But this is the hard truth: “Whoever says, 'I know him,' but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.” 1 John 2:4

Genuine believers sin, but we cannot live in sin (1 John 1:5-7; 1 John 3:6). Our conscience won't allow it.

We believe God when He says “neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.” 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

When we assure ourselves or others that a saved person can live a lifestyle contrary to God's Word, we are dangerously deceived.(1)

If you are living a sinful lifestyle, repent and turn to God (Acts 3:19). If you have friends who claim to be Christians while living sinful lifestyles, show your love by warning them (James 5:19-20; 1 Corinthians 5:12).

-------------------

(1) This deception is culturally motivated. Most people agree that the other sins mentioned in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 (lifestyles of thievery, greed, drunkenness, or swindling) are not Christian. But they are singling out the culturally approved sexual sins such as living together without being married or living as a practicing homosexual.
