Marriage Surprises

This short post offers some ideas for adding sweet surprises to your marriage relationship as you grow together in the Lord.

Scripture encourages us to think of other people's needs and desires instead of simply thinking of our own (Philippians 2:3-4).

A fun way to make our spouse feel special is to plan a surprise.

Most of life is predictable…day in and day out…every week the same. Our marriages can easily become routine, predictable, and boring

Why not plan a small monthly surprise for your spouse? Here are some suggestions to get your creative juices flowing:

1. Do something you’ve never done before. It can be something as simple as adding a note to his lunch.
2. Plan a surprise weekend trip or unexpected meal out.
3. Buy a special gift for no reason at all…it need not be expensive, just thoughtful.
4. Throw an “I Love You Party” and spend an evening listing the reasons you love him.
5. Pitch a tent in the backyard and spend a summer night under the stars.
6. Rent a bicycle built for two and pack a picnic lunch.
7. Plan a Saturday of activities your spouse especially enjoys but seldom gets to do.
8. Do something spontaneous, wild and crazy, unexpected, memorable.
Surprises keep us from being overwhelmed by the routines of life and they keep us from a routine marriage as well.

Robert and I are very serious these days, so a dose of surprise sounds like great medicine. Thank you!

  3. This is a great bunch of ideas. Though with four kids, surprises take a bit more work.=) But that makes them all the better, I think.

  5. Great ideas, Gail! And I'm all for spicing things up with a little surprise for our spouses. Marriage can get rather mundane and predictable if we don't. These are seeds that keep our marriages growing and strong.

  8. Gail, you are so right on about adding surprises to our marriage. It doesn't have to be a big deal either to make an impact on us or our spouse. One surprise that I will say that has been fun for me is when my husband started to plan date nights. Not only did he pick the place, but he'd even have the sitter scheduled. This is so amazing and a surprise.
