Jesus Asks Us to Come, Take, and Learn

I confess that I can easily lose my peace when I focus on difficult things in my life.


Relationship disappointments are the hardest, seeing loved ones walk away from their faith and make tragic choices. These things can leave me worried, sad, angry, or depressed.

That's when I need to listen to Jesus' words in Matthew 11:28-30:

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." 

Come, Take and Learn. 
  • Take His yoke by surrendering ourselves to His will in our lives, seeking His plans and purposes (Ephesians 2:10).

If you also lose your peace at times, I suggest you read this passage daily...better yet, memorize it.

Together let’s find rest for our souls in Jesus.

Aha Moments

Do you know what Jesus says no one can steal from you? It's something that you can give away, and this 1-minute devotion encourages you not to give it away.

Often while reading Scripture, I get an "aha moment."


Recently, while worrying (i.e., failing to trust God), I read John 16 where Jesus is talking to the disciples about the sorrow they'll feel when He dies. He encourages them by telling them they'll again rejoice…and here's where my aha moment came: 

He says (vs. 22), "No one will take away your joy." 

No one can take away the joy of knowing the risen Jesus because it's a joy that isn't dependent on people or circumstances. 

It's a joy dependent on Jesus alone. 

If we lose it, then we've given it away—it hasn't been taken from us. Nothing about Jesus can make us sad or lonely or forgotten or misunderstood or hopeless. 

No one can take away our joy in Jesus. No one.

Jesus knows us and our circumstances, and He knows exactly what we need to hear. 

"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take ♥! I have overcome the world." Jesus (John 16:33)

Try This for Three Weeks to Overcome Worry, Fear, and Anxiety


The definition of worry: to give in to anxiety or fear; allowing our minds to dwell on difficulty or troubles.
 
It's a rare person who doesn't have occasions of worry, stress, or anxiety.
 
Aren't you glad that God understands how we are made and offers wisdom for overcoming our worries and fears? 
 
I encourage you to write down the passage below and recite it out loud whenever you begin to worry. Eventually, you'll memorize the words - they'll be "hidden in your heart" - and it will renew and refresh you whenever things seem hopeless or frustrating. Philippians 4:6-8: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things."  
 
Below you'll find resources to help you overcome worry. Read the 1-minute devotions carefully and prayerfully, and be sure to read all of the linked Bible passages. You might want to keep a journal as you go through these devotions, and you might want to go through them with a friend or with your small group. Why not plan to recite Philippians 4:6-8 each morning and evening for the next three weeks. And prayerfully read one of the twenty-one devotions below each of those days. I guarantee it will help!

This devotion offers a wonderful list of Scripture passages to read, recite, or memorize when you are dealing with anxiety, stress, fear, or worry.

Please start by reading the 1-minute devotion 4 Important Bible Truths to Remember When You Feel Anxious or Fearful.

Next, I encourage you to read the 1-minute devotion A Practical Way to Deal with Specific Sins. It emphasizes the importance of reading, reciting, and memorizing Scripture to help overcome specific sins, temptations, frustrations, and discouragements. For further encouragement, there is a Bite Size Bible Study which also addresses this method: Defeating Sin with Scripture.

God's Word has a powerful influence on our hearts and minds, and the passages below can definitely help you overcome fear and anxiety. You might want to copy this list or save this devotion somewhere so you can easily refer to it when needed.

Dwelling on these passages will help you deal biblically with fear, anxiety, and stress (Colossians 3:16).

💙 Psalm 34:15: "The eyes of the LORD watch over those who do right; his ears are open to their cries for help."

4 Important Bible Truths to Remember When You Feel Anxious or Fearful

Scripture offers these important truths to help us overcome fear, anxiety, and worry.

What a comfort to know that our God fully and completely understands us, both our strengths and weaknesses. 

He knows that many times we give in to worry. And He tells us how to deal with it: 

1. We should take our concerns to the Lord. 

"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." 1 Peter 5:7  

"Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken." Psalm 55:22 

"Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens." Psalm 68:19 

2. When we start to worry, we should pray. 

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."  Philippians 4:6

3. We should seek God’s purposes and deal with our problems one day at a time.

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:33-34

4. We should remember that worry is useless and unproductive. 

"Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?" Matthew 6:27

A Key to Having Peace

Lately I’ve been worrying about things over which I have no control. My anxiety is a sign that I haven’t been faithfully “putting off and putting on.”

“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life...

to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires...

to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” Ephesians 4:22-24

Jesus understands earthly troubles and tells us to put them into eternal perspective: "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33

Paul, echoes this sentiment in 2 Corinthians 4:16-17: "we do not lose heart ... For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all."

It's my prayer to have an eternal perspective. How about you?
