How to Respond to Two Popular but Ungodly Statements

We need to graciously respond to errors when we hear them. This 1-minute devotion explains.

Bible Love Notes periodically features devotions about this subject so we can better understand God's heart and recognize the errors promoted by our culture. My prayer is that it will encourage you to pray and speak truth.

So let's look at two popular statements about abortion:(1)

“We’ll never change the abortion laws, so we should just work on changing people's hearts.”

“I'm personally opposed to abortion, but it's not my place to tell others what they can do.”

Now let's put these statements into proper perspective:

If rape was legal, no one would say, “We’ll never change the laws, so we should just work on changing the hearts of rapists.”

Nor would they say, “I'm personally opposed to rape, but it's not my place to tell others what they can do.”

Both rape and abortion violate the rights of another human being. In both cases our laws should protect the vulnerable person from unjust harm.

I encourage you to gently and graciously explain these things to anyone who uses these excuses.

And, please explain that Scripture is absolutely clear that God creates each person while they are still in their mother's womb (Job 31:15; Psalm 139:13-16; Isaiah 44:2; Isaiah 49:5; Jeremiah 1:5; Luke 1:41-44; Acts 17:25).(2)

It is not our place to take an innocent life unless the mother's life is genuinely in danger (See Abortion Can Be Medically Necessary).

When we stand against abortion, we are not fighting against flesh and blood. We are fighting against the dark powers of our world. So let's put on the full armor of God and fight, dear Christians (Ephesians 6:11-13)!

(1) These excuses are becoming more prevalent among professing Christians. See Walking, Standing, and Finally Sitting which talks about this problem. For more encouragement to stand firm, see Standing Firm on the Word.
