Praise and Nothing Else

The psalmist reminded me of something lacking in my daily life. Perhaps it is lacking in yours as well. This 1-minute devotion explains.

Imagine you have a loving friend who's always available when you ask for his help. You appreciate what he does, but your conversations focus on your needs and desires. You rarely take time to simply tell him he's a great friend.

I have such a Friend whom I’ve treated this way—not a human friend, but my Lord.

Psalm 119:164 brought my failure to mind:

“I will praise you seven times a day because all your regulations are just.”

The psalmist loved God and His Word so much that he made a practice of praising Him seven times each day. He even got up at midnight for that purpose (Psalm 119:62).

How often do I take time to simply praise God, without asking for His help?

In our house, we set an alarm to go off every hour so we can stop and pray. I’m determined that some of those prayers should be pure praise.

Do you need to add some pure praise to your prayers?

Note: The psalmist's practice of praising seven times a day is not a command. We shouldn't make it a legalistic rule. But it should be a reminder to us to take some time each day to simply praise our Lord. Perhaps you could say a sentence or two of pure praise each morning when you get out of bed or at each meal.
