When Jesus fed the 5000, they were eager to follow Him. But not for the right reasons:
“Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.” John 6:26-27
The signs and wonders Jesus performed were part of His message, proving He was the Savior. But Jesus didn’t promise free lunch to those who followed Him. He promised spiritual food.
In like manner, Jesus sometimes miraculously gives people health or wealth, but it’s not a promise.
Faithful Timothy suffered from health problems, but he was spiritually healthy (read more).
Faithful Paul sometimes went hungry, but he always had spiritual food (read more).
Christ promises to prosper us spiritually and sometimes that involves earthly difficulties (John 16:33). But those difficulties are giving us food that endures to eternal life (1 Peter 1:6-9).
Why are you following Christ?
Bible Love Notes
I admit it. I was following Christ because I wanted him to cure my anxiety and insomnia. After reading this note, now I want to follow him because of spiritual food.
