Misquoting God

It's a serious sin to put words in God's mouth, especially when those words contradict God's Word. This 1-minute devotion explains one such case.

No one believes a child rapist and a gossip are guilty of equal sins, least of all God.

But I regularly hear Christians say, "God views all sins the same."

So let's review this biblically:

1. All sins are bad.

2. All sins have equal eternal consequences (Hell).

3. All sins can be forgiven in Christ.(1)

But that doesn't mean God views sins equally.(2)

When we claim He does, we contradict Scripture and encourage a casual attitude toward sin.

God judges sins differently according to:
    1. Motive (Numbers 15:22-31Luke 12:47-48).
    2. Knowledge and opportunity (Luke 12:48John 19:11).
    3. Position and influence (James 3:1Mark 12:38-40).
    4. Type of sin (Exodus 21:1222:11 Corinthians 6:18Matthew 18:6-7Matthew 12:3123:23).

Christians have God's Spirit and His Word, and we're responsible to share truth accurately (2 Timothy 2:15).

“The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows [a greater sin]. But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows [a lesser sin]. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” Luke 12:47-48(3)

We’ve been given much, so let’s learn what Scripture teaches and quit quoting errors. See the resources below.(2)

    (1) Actually, there is one sin that is unforgivable (Matthew 12:31).

    (3) In this passage, God calls intentional sins more serious than unintentional sins, something also present in the Old Testament laws (Numbers 15:22-31).

    1. Hey what exactly is the unpardonable sin...i know what scripture says but what does it mean? For example i battle fears of this and i have had some really bad thoughts before, i think that mostly they show up as what ifs but sometimes it imaginations and i cant tell if it is really me. I think i have allowed error in my life because i have believed that there is no such thing and i have allowed thoughts in that i should not have. I will say that i know the truth but im tormented to think otherwise. I was told that i had ocd and that my sufferings were common. I began taking medication and this seem to help but then i came across a man that said taking anti depressants were evil (pharmakeia) and that i would go to hell. At first i thought the guy was crazy but i felt wrong for taking them so i stop and my thoughts have since gotten worse. I wonder if i have committed this sin. Any response would be appreciated. Thank you

      1. Dear Angela, my comments were not being published, so I just read your comment today. When a person commits the unpardonable sin, they don't care. They don't fear about what they've lost. They don't fear hell. They have totally turned away from God. You obviously have not committed the unpardonable sin. Please get a prayer partner to pray with you through this difficult time in your life. Take your thoughts captive and make them obedient to Christ by writing out Scriptures about God's love and your salvation and reciting them when your thoughts are negative. Also - no one goes to hell for taking antidepressants.

      2. Angela, I know that some forms of depression are mis-diagnosed. However, if you have clinical depression and have been prescribed anti-depressants, take them. Only those who reject Christ as their Saviour have hell as their final destiny. If you have asked God to forgive your sins, received Jesus death as the punishment for your sin and acknowledge He rose from the dead, you have His Holy Spirit dwelling within you. The unpardonable sin is blaspheming the Holy Spirit. That's cursing, profaning, speaking evil against the Holy Spirit.
        Praying for clarity for you.

      3. According to the theologians I trust most, it was a sin committed by the Pharisees. They claimed that Jesus used the power of Satan to cast out demons. It was a sin specific to the Pharisees at that time, they saw Him perform miracles and accused Him of using the power of demons. https://www.gotquestions.org/unpardonable-sin.html
Matthew 12:Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit
22 Then a demon-oppressed man who was blind and mute was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the man spoke and saw. 23 And all the people were amazed, and said, “Can this be the Son of David?” 24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons.” 25 Knowing their thoughts, he said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. 26 And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 Or how can someone enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed he may plunder his house. 30 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. 31 Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

    2. Hey, I just have an interjection with regards to the antidepressants. Depression is a spirit and we need not be bound in taking meds to depress a spirit, you would not go to hell for taking antidepressants, however, deliverance is necessary. Believe that you can be free from the spirit of depression and you shall be free in Jesus name.
Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
1 John 3:8 For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
I command every spirit of depression to loose it's hold from off of your mind in the name of JESUS.
Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

    3. Jennz...depression is an illness just like any physical illness. God created our brains and along with them the chemical, serotonin. Some people don’t have enough and that’s what causes depression. Anti-depressants help to supply what’s missing. It’s no different from taking an antibiotic if you have an infection OR medication for high blood pressure. If you are saved, you are SAVED from any other spirit inhabiting you. No spirit can stand against The Holy Spirit. Please, please, please be careful about the advice you give to people with medical needs. I am only qualified because I have experienced and continue to experience depression. It took me YEARS to accept that it is an illness just like any other. I blamed myself for not trusting God enough to deliver me from my depression, until a Christian doctor finally got through to me what it really is. I thank God for him because I don’t think I’d still be here without his counsel and encouragement.

    4. Take your medicine until God tells you, you have been delivered from the medicine... If the medicine is helping you dont you think that's healing within itself because we know some thing even medicine dont help. But God gave man wisdom to create something that can help with some things. Of course use scriptures, prayer and Revelation from God. Those things will definitely cause deliverance but until you are sure by way of the Holy Spirit take your medicine..

    5. The unpardonable sin is any sin you refuse to repent of, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit would be to deny God is who is at work in Christ through the Holy Spirit...why? The only way to the Father is the Son. The only way to know the Son is the Holy Spirit who revealed His will.
