Baghdad, 2007: PFC Brendan Schweigart was hit by a sniper. The bullet went into his side and out his chest, where it was stopped by a pocket Bible he kept in his bulletproof vest.
If the Bible had not been there, it’s likely that the bullet would have ricocheted off the armor and back into his body, possibly killing him. (See The Body Armor of God.)
This is not the first time a pocket Bible has been credited for saving the life of a soldier. Small pocket Bibles with metal covers were issued to soldiers in WWII. In fact, I have my father’s. (See Heart Shield Bibles WWII.)
But I have a story about a Bible saving my life too:
I was a disillusioned, nominal Christian who saw no purpose in life beyond my own happiness.
Then, I began reading the Bible…and it led me to the Lord, who saved me from eternal death.
Hebrews 4:12: "For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."
My story is every bit as incredible as PFC Schweigart’s in the spiritual sense. What about you? Do you have a story about the Bible saving your life?

I am amazed that no one has commented on this post Gail.. It is very well addressed and on mark.. We are to teach even in the uncomfortable areas. I applaud you for standing for truth. Some days I feel like we haven't learned anything from history. I appreciate your efforts for the Cross and enjoy your readings. Many tend to fit scripture to their opinions and go no deeper, I'm glad you do and share those insights. Prayers and blessings.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your encouragement!!
DeletePlease pray that I share God's Word accurately.
Thanks.
I have 2 stories. The first when I was 29 + found out mum precious mum had a terminal illness. It rocked me to the core + I grieved terribly for a long time. But that night I got out my Bible + wrote down many of God's promises. I still have the list. In the 18 months that followed, God's promises were a comfort + consolation to me. The second, was when our elderly neighbour passed away suddenly. We didn't know until early evening when my husband went to investigate as we'd not seen him all day. Later that night, as I sat quietly, the reference "Psalm 116:15" came into my mind. I didn't even know Psalm 116 had over 15 verses. Curious, I looked it up + it couldn't have been more pertinent or appropriate. I believe it was definitely from the Lord + I spoke of it at our neighbour's funeral. That verse reads "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints..."
ReplyDeleteThose are beautiful examples of God's comfort and assurance. Thanks for sharing them.
