Prompted to Pray

If we are "watchful" we just might hear God prompting us to pray for a specific situation or person. This 1-minute devotion offers Scriptures about prayer.

"Is everything okay with little Scooter Pie?" I asked my daughter.

"Yes, why?"

"Well, last night before bed, I had the strongest prompting to pray for her."

My five-year-old granddaughter was with her siblings at their other grandma's house, and only later did we discover that she'd been bitten by fire ants and refused to let anyone treat her. Her hand had gotten badly swollen, and that's why I believe God prompted me to pray.

I'm not always sensitive to God's Spirit, but I imagine these promptings happen more than we realize if we are "watchful and thankful" (Colossians 4:2).

We may think we choose to pray for someone or something on our own when it's actually God's Spirit prompting us.

It's an aspect of "praying in the Holy Spirit" (Jude 1:20; Ephesians 6:18), and it's a good reason to pause and ask God to direct our prayers.

  1. Beautiful post. I've been prompted to pray and had others prompted to pray for me, as well. I also believe there are times when we are called to intercede and we never find out for whom or why, but God knows.

  2. Yes, I've been prompted to pray before. I could tell of 5 very distinct times the Spirit prompted me. The first time I was in high school. I was in class and I began to weep and get upset for my boyfriend at the time. I didn't know why, but all of a sudden I was upset that I thought he drank too much. Later that day, I was informed he'd been drinking the night before and all that morning and they found him in his car at school in a pool of vomit. He was resuscitate and rushed to the hospital. He died that day and was brought back to life at the very time I was weeping for him. The Spirit really was the one weeping, just through me.
