When Busyness Gets the Best of Us

It's easy to let things get out of hand, getting so busy we miss God's best for us. This devotion offers 4 truths from Scripture that can help.

During a typical week, how often do you feel “too busy”?

Sometimes things like births, holidays, sickness, family problems, and life transitions take over our schedule. But even when life is running smoothly, we can find ourselves too busy due to bad priorities.

These truths from the Bible can help us:
  • Ephesians 2:10—God has special purposes for each of us, things He prepared in advance for us to do.We don't want to be so busy with other things that we miss those purposes or do them halfheartedly. Don't you love knowing God has special plans for you?
  • 1 Peter 4:10—God has also given us specific gifts so we can be faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.Don't you love knowing God has given you specific skills?
  • Colossians 3:23—This verse is our answer in a nutshell. If we commit our work to Him, He will direct us to use our time and energy wisely. Don't you love knowing God is your boss?
  • In John 15, Jesus says He's glorified when we “bear much fruit, but He's not talking about being overextended. He's talking about faithfully using our skills for the purposes He's specifically designed for us.
It may mean mom gives up her job to better fulfill her purposes in her home. It may mean dad changes jobs to have more time for church and family. It means we quit being too busy and start letting God schedule our lives.

If you own Wisdom for Life, you might want to read or re-read Day 45 which explains a time when my husband and I had to adjust our plans to God's plans.
