Have you ever wondered why parents have become the scapegoats for so many problems? Jesus predicted it.

Have you ever wondered why parents are so often blamed for relationship problems?

In the devotion When Persecution Comes from Your Own Family, we discussed Christ's warning in Matthew 10:35-36 where He quoted Micah 7:6:

For a son dishonors his father, a daughter rises up against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law— a man’s enemies are the members of his own household.

Both Matthew 10 and Micah 7 emphasize the younger generation's rejection of their parents.

When cultures become ungodly, it's not simply sexual relationships that become unnatural and corrupted (Romans 1:26-27). Ungodly cultures also affect God's design in other relationships. And that's why we are seeing so many adult children lose their "natural" gratitude and respect for their parents.

Modern culture overemphasizes parents' failures and promotes neglect, mistreatment, and disrespect for parents, making false teachings like Boundaries popular. But Proverbs 30:11-13 gives us God's view of those who discredit their parents.

God stresses honoring parents both for the well-being of our parents and our own well-being. Those who dishonor their parents dishonor God and do damage to themselves. If they are Christians, it deeply affects their relationship with God.

God knows parents are never perfect, and some are downright difficult. But our faith in Christ gives us the wisdom and grace we need to maintain a natural love and respect for them.
