For over forty years, May 4th has been considered the unofficial Star Wars holiday because “May the fourth” sounds like the Star Wars greeting “May the force be with you.”
The force is a fictional “energy field.” I guess you could say it’s the Star Wars god.
But I recently heard of a much better thing to celebrate on May 4th. We Christians can say, “May the Fourth be with you,” meaning our Lord, the fourth person in the fiery furnace with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (Daniel 3).
Jesus has nothing to do with fictional energy fields, but He has everything to do with standing with us during hardship and saving us from the fires of hell.
The Jedi warriors continually battle the “Evil Empire,” and during our time on earth, we battle the evil empire of Satan (Ephesians 6:10-18). But we know we have the final victory in that battle because our Lord defeated the kingdom of darkness on the cross (1 John 3:8; 1 John 4:4; Hebrews 2:14-15; Colossians 2:13-15).
Our Lord doesn’t enlist Jedi warriors. He enlists prayer warriors who stand against the powers of darkness in the power of His Spirit. We don’t need lightsabers because we have something which transmits a more powerful type of light—the sword of the Spirit which is God's Word (Ephesians 6:10-18).
Star Wars starts with this line: “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…”
Our story begins before time and ends in permanent and eternal victory (Genesis 1:1; Revelation 21:1-8).
So on this May 4th, I greet you: “May the Fourth be with you!”
