Colossians 2:8 contains both a warning and an explanation of what we see in the world around us.
“See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.”
The NLT puts it this way: “Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.”
The Greek word translated “capture” in this verse means to be carried off by a “predator.”
From the beginning, Satan has been that predator, an evil spiritual force. He deceived Eve with this opening line: “Did God really say [that]?” And he’s been asking men and women that question ever since, discrediting God’s Word and taking people captive with false teachings based on hollow, deceptive nonsense.
“We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one” (1 John 5:19).
Let’s take special care to read, study, and trust God’s Word, testing everything by God’s truth.
“Let no one deceive you with empty words.” Ephesians 5:6
