Biblical Racial Equality: God Hates Racism

God hates bigotry. This devotion offers multiple Scriptures to reveal God's attitude toward racism.

God hates racism. All races have bad and good examples. No race is inherently inferior, superior, good, or evil.(1)

God favors godly people no matter their race or ethnic background:

1. In the Old Testament, God warned against mingling with pagans, but He expected the Jews to treat non-Jewish converts equally (Leviticus 19:34). It was about their beliefs and actions, not their ethnicity or race.(2)

2. When Aaron and Miriam criticized Moses for marrying a black woman, God rebuked them. See Numbers 12 and Did Moses Marry a Black Woman?

3. The conversion of the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:26-39) shows God's equal treatment of all races.

4. Christ also broke down walls of prejudice in his encounter with the Samaritan woman (John 4:1-42).

God hates bigotry. This devotion offers multiple Scriptures to reveal God's attitude toward racism.

5. James 2:1-9 rebukes bigotry based on wealth or position.

The Bible is filled with proof that prejudice is sinful.

I especially recommend God Honors a Former Prostitute, which shows that God is not ashamed to have a former prostitute in the lineage of Christ.

⯈The 1-minute devotion 4 Important Truths in a Difficult Passage helps us understand Christ's conversation with a Gentile mother. And 3 Reasons the Centurion's Faith Amazed Jesus shows Christ's high praise for a Gentile soldier.

“Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.” 1 John 4:20

It's racist to claim that any race or ethnic group is born with good, evil, superior, or inferior characteristics. God makes no judgments based on outward appearance and neither should we (1 Samuel 16:7; 1 Peter 3:3-4; Proverbs 31:30; James 2:1-9).

Footnotes:

(1) We are all descendants of Adam, so in that sense, there are no separate "races." But prejudice is one of the many sins we experience in our fallen world, and it can be based on any number of things: power, position, wealth, nationality, skin color, ethnicity, religion, or cultural background. In addition, it can be based on education, finances, position, etc.

(2) God set the Jews apart from the pagan beliefs of the nations around them in the same way that Christians (from every ethnic background) should separate ourselves from evil influences (1 Corinthians 15:33). All religions besides Christianity are false. Scripture makes that clear.
