3 Ways a Christmas Wreath Can Remind us of Our Savior

The Christmas Wreath is filled with wonderful symbolism for the holiday.

Despite unsubstantiated claims that connect Christmas trees to paganism, the tradition to have decorated trees probably began in 16th-century Germany. And because the Germans were very resourceful, the tradition of Christmas wreaths was also adopted. It was a way to use the greenery they’d pruned from their trees.

Years later, in the 1800s, a German pastor started the tradition of the Advent wreath, lighting candles in anticipation of Christmas. But there are other ways the wreath is an excellent symbol for Christmas:

1. Victory over sin and death.
The wreath had long been an emblem of victory in Greek and Roman cultures, and it certainly fits the theme of Christ being born to redeem us from sin (1 Corinthians 15:57; 2 Corinthians 2:14; Colossians 2:15).

2. Joy in our relationship with our Bridegroom.
The wreath is often used in the joyous celebration of a wedding. The coming of Christ, our Bridegroom, perfectly fits that theme (Matthew 9:15; Mark 2:18-20; Luke 5:34-35; 2 Corinthians 11:2; Revelation 19:7; Ephesians 5:25-27).

The Christmas Wreath is filled with wonderful symbolism for the holiday.
3. Eternal life.
The circular shape and evergreen branches are a great representation of eternal life that only Christ can give (John 3:16;36; John 17:3; Romans 6:23).

I encourage you to think through the symbolism of the Christmas tree and the Christmas wreath and other common decorations, and explain the symbolism to your children and grandchildren.

And start some new traditions too.

This year I bought several bunches of baby’s breath to use in my décor. When I see them, they remind me of the most important baby who ever breathed…my Savior Jesus.
