Why We Need to Read 1 Kings 18-19

The wonderful true story in 1 Kings 18-19 will give you encouragement and strength. This 1-minute devotion explains.

When we face persecution for trusting God’s Word, when we hear or read biased articles painting God’s people in a negative light, when friends or family mock our faith, or when we feel alone in our beliefs, we need to read 1 Kings 18-19.

“Jezebel was killing off the Lord’s prophets.” Elijah went to wicked king Ahab and asked him to bring the people of Israel to Mount Carmel along with 850 of their pagan prophets.

Then Elijah did an extremely brave thing, proving that God was God and the pagan prophets were worthless. Please read it in full. It will encourage you! (1 Kings 18)

But afterwards, Elijah got depressed. He felt alone and afraid because so many in Israel had turned from God. He told God, “I have had enough, Lord,” and he asked the Lord to let him die.

What followed is a sweet picture of our Lord’s love and understanding. He gave Elijah time to sleep and twice sent an angel to feed him freshly baked bread. Then He showed Himself to Elijah in a special way and assured him that he wasn’t alone (1 Kings 19).

So whenever you or I feel weary of facing criticism for our faith, we can remember that our God is God and He perfectly understands our frustrations and sorrows (Hebrews 4:15-16). We are never alone (Hebrews 13:5).
