Cain: The Ultimate Pouter

Cain pouted his way through life. This 1-minute devotion explains why we must learn from his bad example.

God saw that Cain’s heart wasn't right, so He rejected Cain's offering. Then Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. Genesis 4:5

Basically, Cain pouted.

Next, God explained an important truth to Cain - a truth that applies to all of us:

“If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” Genesis 4:7

Cain ignored this warning, kept pouting, and murdered his brother in cold blood.

When God confronted Cain, he pouted some more. He had no sorrow for his premeditated crime and no pity for his dead brother, but he had plenty of pity for himself.

Cain told the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear.” Genesis 4:13

Sadly, Cain's attitude has become quite prevalent in our modern culture. Many people consider themselves victims. They blame others for their problems and feel sorry for the consequences of their sins, not sorry for the sins.

God wants us to learn from Cain. He wants us to choose the freedom of righteousness and repentance instead of the bondage of jealousy, self-pity, and pouting (1 John 1:9).

Let's “do what is right (Genesis 4:7).
