Many Christians equate love with approval, affirmation, and praise.
They equate hate with disapproval, rebuke, and punishment.
This is a huge misunderstanding.
God's love for us is perfect. That's why He punishes, rebukes, and warns us as well as affirming and encouraging us.
“Do not lose heart and give up when you are corrected by Him; For the Lord disciplines and corrects those whom He loves, And He punishes every son whom He receives and welcomes [to His heart].” Hebrews 12:5-6 AMP
“Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.” ~ Jesus, Revelation 3:19
Parents who always approve, affirm and praise their children hinder their spiritual growth.
Parents who balance honest affirmation with appropriate disapproval enable their children to become responsible, self-controlled, God-fearing adults.
God isn't seeking children who feel affirmed no matter what they do. He's seeking children who understand the true meaning of love:
“Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.” John 14:23-24
