Narcigesis - Misusing Scripture

To understand narcigesis - a seriously flawed way of looking at Scripture, we need to understand Narcissus of Greek mythology. #BibleLoveNotes #Bible

In Greek mythology, Narcissus drowns because he's fixated on the beauty of his own reflection in a pool of water.

That's why we call arrogant, selfish people narcissists.

I recently discovered a similar word: narcigesis

To understand narcigesis, we must first understand exegesis.

Exegesis is the preferred method of Bible teaching. It means explaining Scripture after careful study of the words, the context, and the Bible as a whole.

Narcigesis is quite different and quite popular.

It explains a passage of Scripture with the focus on man, not God. Blending Scripture with cultural errors, narcigesis promises health, wealth and carefree living. Passages on personal responsibility and personal sin are ignored  or "reinterpreted."

Narcigesis is one reason Colossians 2:8 says, "Don't let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ."

  1. I'm reminded of the Bible's warnings against false teachers over and over as the days grow darker and darker.

    Then in 1 Timothy 4:1 & 2:
The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.

This scripture goes on to talk about us being deceived about our diets even. I had often wondered how bread, eggs, butter, and cheese could be so terrible for us when they were made for us and given to us with our Lord's blessing. According to His Word, they aren't, it's as I suspected. People aren't thankful for their blessings. Plus we are too busy listening to the deceiving spirits, demons, empty philosophies and "high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ."

Thank you for another Biblically sound, thought inducing article! May you be blessed for these quick studies so rich in His Word.
