How to Avoid Spiritual Spam

There's nothing wrong with spam unless it's on the internet or part of Christian teaching. This 1-minute devotion explains.

Internet spam: “junk food” that clogs our internet arteries, representing itself as meat when it’s not. 

The origin of the term comes from Hormel’s SPAM luncheon meat (Shoulder of Pork and Ham). Poor Hormel gave up their attempts to protect their trademark. The term is here to stay.

Lots of people enjoy SPAM luncheon meat. It's popular in the Hawaiian Islands (even McDonald's serves SPAM and eggs). 

But no one enjoys internet spam.

Even worse are spiritual spammers … "junk food" teachers who try to put God in a box can, promising quick and easy faith (Colossians 2:8).

They chop up fatty worldly philosophies with "pieces parts" of the gospel to form something that only vaguely resembles the true "meat" found in Scripture. 

 They ignore Christ's warning that “whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it” (Matthew 16:25).

Let's get the spiritual spam out of our diets and begin feeding on the wholesome meat of truth.

    Great analogy and so true about emphasizing "love" but abandoning the rest of the inconvenient truths...

    I like the connection you made here between internet spam and all the "junk" that takes our eyes off of God. All the internet spam is not only annoying, it takes up time in deleting it. Spiritual spam takes up our time too. Thanks for this easy way to keep this in mind. (Visiting from Faith Filled Friday.)

    Great reminder!!
    Interesting that it takes a devotional for me to learn what SPAM means as far as the food goes.
    But the most important thing is to test everything against God's Word. So many times, while listening to online messages my ears (physical and spiritual) will perk up and I'll know something that was said isn't Biblically sound...so off I go on a hunt through God's Word.
