Caffeine-Free or Extra Espresso?

What ordering coffee in a foreign country taught me about our wonderful God. #BibleLoveNotes #Bible

“I’d like a caffeine-free latte,” I said.

The Hungarian waitress looked confused for a moment and then she proudly announced, “Oh! Extra espresso!”

The language barrier can be funny.

Once my husband ordered mayonnaise, but the German waiter brought him a glass of schnapps. Another time I asked the Hungarian stylist to trim my hair about a half inch, but he gave me the shortest haircut I’ve ever had.

The language barrier can also be stressful. Missionaries and ex-pats know this well. And even when a person knows the language, they may not be able to transmit spiritual concepts cross-culturally.

But God has no language barrier. He's “fluent” in every language and culture.

People from every culture and language group have embraced Christ. No wonder He's called the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14). Let's rejoice today in our fluent God!

    1. Yes, even within the same language group we can misunderstand each other...that's true. The effects of the Tower of Babel are with us yet today...but isn't it wonderful that our love for Christ crosses all language barriers! Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

  4. God is so amazing! He understands us, even when our mouth says one thing but our heart says another!
When living in an apartment in Germany before God made me His child, we had a K, LR, & Bdrm on the same floor as our landlord's daughter and hubby's bedroom. One weekend afternoon we were playing pinochle with another couple when she brought another couple up the stairs to their bedroom. As she passed our open door she said, I bet we're hindering your concentration." To be agreeable, I said, "Yes!" lol :-)

    1. Love hearing these little language memories. Why were you living in Germany?
When we did a short term trip to Turkey about 15 years ago, we stayed in Istanbul for over a month, and I'll never forget the repeated greetings of the carpet salesmen trying to get our attention. My favorite was "Do you looking for me?" : )

  8. Indeed your love notes are something I look forward to every day, it’s part of my me time on my train ride to work. I am reminded of the temple and the tabernacle in the Old Testament when I read your love notes - you take us from the gate of the temple to the holy of Holies because every time I read your love notes I pray and praise God. Stay blessed and may God continue to use you.
