The "Big C" and Joshua 1:9

We often call cancer the "Big C" but this woman with cancer discovered another C far bigger.

JoAnn was awaiting her diagnosis and it didn't sound good.

"Well, Lord," she prayed, "it looks like it might be cancer, the 'big C.'"

She'd beaten it once before, but it looked like it might be threatening her health again.

That's when she felt that Christ spoke to her heart and told her He was the "Big C," so she could put her cancer in perspective.

Days later, when the diagnosis proved to be what she'd suspected, JoAnn continued to experience God's peace. Through surgery, chemo, and radiation therapy, she depended on Christ's strength and love.

Cancer, confusion, crisis … all of these and every other problem in our lives are "little c's" compared to our hope, strength, and peace in Christ.

Christ is, was, and always will be the "Big C."

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

Whatever your challenges in life, remember that Christ is your "Big C." Draw closer to Him in your difficulty and find the rest, hope, trust, joy, and peace that only He can give (John 16:33).

I thank JoAnn Lampe for allowing me to share this story from her life. Eight years after I wrote this devotion, JoAnn went to meet her "Big C" face-to-face. Written originally in 2014, updated in 2023.

I encourage you to read these 1-minute devotions about Joni, a great example of someone who has lived a life focused on Christ despite her huge difficulties in life:
