In our study of Romans 1:16-32, we’ve discovered that when people “suppress the truth” it always involves acceptance and approval of sexual sin.
It begins with the approval of premarital sex, a “natural” sexual sin (i.e. one male and one female). But it leads to approval of “unnatural” sexual sins (i.e. same-gender, more than two, etc.):
“God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.” Romans 1:26-27
Unnatural sex not only contradicts God's loving commands. It also mocks God's creation design for male and female intimacy.
Scripture explains that sexual sins affect us in ways that other sins do not (1 Corinthians 6:18), and Romans 1 makes it clear that unnatural sins take it up a notch, bringing more damage to a person’s soul.
We're under great pressure to approve these sins and stand by while men and women choose an eternity in hell (1 Corinthians 6:9-11). But we know the power of the gospel to forgive, transform, and bring eternal life—and we are not ashamed of the gospel! (Romans 1:16).
