God Hearts

What does it really mean for someone to be a man or woman "after God's own heart"? This devotion explains.

What made King David special?

When Samuel anointed David king, God told him:

"The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7

David's predecessor King Saul had a great outward appearance (1 Samuel 9:2). But he didn't have a "God heart."

Instead of following God’s instructions, Saul “followed his heart” (1 Samuel 13:14; 1 Samuel 15).(1)

“God removed Saul and replaced him with David, a man about whom God said, ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do.’”(2) Acts 13:22

Saul looked like a king, but he didn't act like one.

Similarly, we can look like a Christian but not act like one.

Only those who guard their hearts do what God wants them to do (Proverbs 4:23). They fully understand this wonderful truth:

"For God, who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ." 2 Corinthians 4:6

Do you have a "God heart"?

(1) See A Guarded Heart which addresses the popular saying "Follow your heart" and compares it to Proverbs 4:23.

(2) These Old Testament examples are given to teach us (1 Corinthians 10:11). David backslid and committed terrible sins at one point in his life, but he knew how to get his "God heart" back. He repented fully, accepted his consequences, and restored his relationship with God. See Psalm 51, King David's Key to a Healthy Faith and Short List Repentance. After David’s repentance, God continued to judge other kings by his good example (1 King 15:3).
