Can a Christian Continue in Sin?

Can a Genuine Christian live a sinful lifestyle? Scripture gives us a definitive answer. This devotion explains.

When Christians use the word “Lord,” it's more than a name. It's a proclamation that we've given Christ authority over our lives.

“You are not your own; you were bought at a price.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

That’s why 1 John 3:6 says, “No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.”

We won't be sinless until we see Jesus face-to-face, but our sins bother us and our love for Christ compels us to change (1 John 3:2-3).

That’s why 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 says: “Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.”

These aren't simply sins. These are sinful lifestyles.

A genuine Christian can fall into sin, but we cannot live in it.

If someone tells you otherwise, share Romans 6:1-2 with them:

“What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?”

Additional Insights

If Christ is our Lord:

1. We obey Him.

John 14:21: "Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them."

Romans 12:1-2: "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."

2. Our godliness is internal as well as external.

2 Timothy 3:1-5: "But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people."

Matthew 7:22-23: "Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'"

3. We show others love and forgiveness.

Matthew 6:15: "But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins."

1 Corinthians 13:2: "If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing."

4. We are not ashamed of the gospel.

Romans 1:16: "I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes...."

Mark 8:38: "If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels."
