Irrelevant Opinions

Rob Bell has something interesting to say about God's Word...interesting but 100% inaccurate. This 1-minute devotion explains.

“The church will continue to be even more irrelevant when it quotes letters from 2,000 years ago as their best defense. Rob Bell

If Rob Bell was talking about a law book, a medicine book, or an atlas, he'd be right. Those things have changed dramatically in the last 2000 years. Most 2000-year-old books are irrelevant apart from historical research.

But Bell was talking about the "letters" (Epistles) in God's Word, and those letters are alive (Hebrews 4:12).

And they're eternal:

“The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever. Isaiah 40:8

“Your word, LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.” Psalm 119:89

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” Matthew 24:35

“For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For, ‘All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.’ And this is the word that was preached to you.” 1 Peter 1:23-25

What's actually irrelevant? Human words like Bell's—that change, evolve, confuse, contradict, and bend with culture—or God's Word that has endured for 2000 years?

Note: "Ex-vangelical" or "progressive Christian" is the title many former evangelicals have adopted to express their departure from their Bible-believing backgrounds. I encourage you to check out the Bible Love Notes Ex-vangelical Collection.
