When the young couple asked their father for a large interest-free loan to buy a house, he was happy to help. In fact, he planned to surprise them the following year by giving them the remainder of the loan as a gift. It was his pleasure to bless them.
But over the next few months, their interest in him all but disappeared. They were enjoying their new home and they had no time for him. He tried to explain his disappointment, but they didn’t respond.
That’s when he realized his gifts were only feeding their selfishness, and he quit being generous.
Our Heavenly Father has given us the greatest gift – a "new home" with Him in Christ. If we respond selfishly, we’ll also forfeit spiritual blessings (Matthew 25:14-30; 1 Corinthians 3:9-15; Galatians 6:7-9).
"Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously." 2 Corinthians 9:6
Let's consider how much we owe Him and gratefully give Him our best (Romans 12:1-2; Hebrews 11:6).
