Dwelling

Col. 3:16, 8 x 8 Method to memorize Scripture, Let's God's Word dwell in your richly
Determined to live what I believe, I’m starting a new discipline adapted from a Scripture memory method called figure 8

My purpose: to keep my mind more consistently focused on God’s Word throughout the day so I fully cast my cares upon Christ instead of fretting and stressing as much as I have lately.

On Saturday, I started reading the same chapter of Scripture every hour until I’d read it a total of 8 times. I plan to do this for 8 days before choosing another chapter.  (When responsibilities prevent me from doing it 8 consecutive hours, I'll just make sure I do it 8 separate times each day.)

Why?
  1. It builds my faith hearing God’s Word throughout the day (Romans 10:17)
  2. It allows God’s Word to “dwell” in my soul (Colossians 3:16)
  3. It keeps me focused on Christ, not my problems (Philippians 4:8)
  4. It reminds me to put God’s Word into practice and this gives me God’s peace (Philippians 4:9
Are there ways you keep yourself focused on Christ? I'd love to hear.

  1. What a wonderful way to memorizing scripture for this slow mind of mine....at least when it comes to memory work. I'm going to give it a try :-)

  4. I am not fond of memorizing. Its blocked my mind. What I do is when I read God's word, I rather study every word and ask God what He is telling to me from his words and how can I apply it and then pray from that chapter or verse. But, I do admire people like you who can memorize verses or chapter from the bible.

    1. I just started this method last week, Joy, and I don't know if I will necessarily memorize the entire chapter, but it's been interesting how the words have gained new meaning as I've repeated them so often. And the most important thing is that we dwell on God's Words in whatever way works best for us. Your way of memorizing sounds like a great idea.

  7. I totally agree with you about needing to fill our minds with His thoughts throughout the day - keeping us from worry or stress. Not just in the morning, but all through the day ...

  9. What a good idea. My take on this is: find two or three verses that you need to meditate on and read them 8 times a day. My verses are Ephesian 3:16-20. We all need to know that God loves us and not just have head knowledge but heart knowledge! A know that I know that I know experience. I want these scriptures to become more real to me than anything else. That God LOVES ME!

  10. I love the idea of dwelling on God's Word consistently. It is my heartfelt desire to give God's Word first place in my life.

This is an encouraging devotion, Thanks.
