Validity: Don't Believe Everything You Read

It's important not to pass "news" along until we've followed these Biblical principles. #BibleLoveNotes #Bible #Devotions

"The trouble with quotes on the internet is you can’t check their validity."   ~ Abraham Lincoln

I saw this quote on Pinterest making fun of the way so many of us find our "facts." We’re bombarded by so much information and it's hard to know what is accurate.

I’ve had friends send me panicked emails about terrible political or religious situations based completely on misinformation. And some of these scams are started for the explicit purpose of making Christians look foolish.

We can avoid foolishness by listening to James 1:19:

"Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry."

The principles in this verse apply to the things we read as well as the things we hear. We should read things carefully, check them out thoroughly, and refuse to let our emotions get the best of us.

I'm so glad that we need not take these precautions with God's Word because it is "flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times.” Psalm 12:6

Note: I'm not sure Lincoln actually said this....well, at least I didn't hear him say it... but I read it on the internet so it must be true.

Some Scriptures that also apply:

Proverbs 12:23: The prudent keep their knowledge to themselves, but a fool's heart blurts out folly.
Proverbs 18:2: Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their own opinions.

    1. Hi Keefyb,

This post doesn't say we shouldn't listen to preachers on the internet. There are some wonderful Christian preachers on the internet.

It is explaining that we must be careful not to believe things without checking them out because there is lots of misinformation on the internet.

Regarding the issues with homosexuals and lesbians, we have solid teaching in the Bible. If we want to talk to "counselors" who help us find these truths in Scripture, that's a good thing, but there are many counselors who tell us things that conflict with Scripture and it doesn't matter how good their advice sounds, it's not true.

If you are unsure about the biblical teaching on homosexuality, I encourage you to go to the top of this page and click on "Bible Love Notes Archive." When it opens, scroll down until you see "Biblical Teaching on homosexuality." click that link and it will take you to a number of articles that explain what the Bible teaches.
