What Scripture Says about Abortion

Even though the exact word is not found in Scripture, abortion is still clearly addressed.

While the word “abortion” is not found in Scripture, it is still forbidden. We can determine this by "correctly handling the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15).

1. God gives life:

Acts 17:25: "And [God] is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else."

2. Life begins in the womb:

Job 31:15: "Did not he who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us both within our mothers?"

Psalm 139:13-16: "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be."

Even though the exact word is not found in Scripture, abortion is still clearly addressed
Isaiah 44:2: "This is what the LORD says-- he who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you: Do not be afraid, Jacob, my servant, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen."

Isaiah 49:5: "And now the LORD says-- he who formed me in the womb to be his servant to bring Jacob back to him and gather Israel to himself, for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD and my God has been my strength…"

Jeremiah 1:5: "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

Luke 1:41-44: "When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: 'Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.'"

3. Murder - taking an innocent life - violates God’s commands

Exodus 20:13: "You shall not murder."

Psalm 106:37-38: "They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to false gods. 38 They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was desecrated by their blood."

Jeremiah 7:30-31: "The people of Judah have done evil in my eyes, declares the Lord...They have built the high places of Topheth in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to burn their sons and daughters in the fire—something I did not command, nor did it enter my mind."

Scripture does not specifically mention every type of murder, but we know that taking innocent lives is murder whatever form it takes.

  2. I am a devoted Christian, and I believe in a woman's right to choose what to do w/her own body. Most women who have abortions, do so in the first trimester before anything is, "formed". These scriptures are misleading and abortion is not murder under the proper circumstances.

    1. Where is the first trimester rule in Scripture, Merry?

Does Psalm 139 say, "For you created my inmost being after the first trimester; you knit me together in my mother’s womb, but not until after the first trimester."

And I guess God doesn't know about the first trimester rule since he says BEFORE the first trimester He knew and set apart Jeremiah.

You are lying to yourself, Merry.

These Scriptures are clear. What's misleading is the lies our culture is telling. You can choose to believe culture or God, and if you are genuinely a devoted Christian, you will agree with God, not culture.

In addition, even though you are dead wrong about this first trimester belief: if you think it's okay in the first trimester and not after that, you better be voting against all of the current abortion laws and speaking out against them because they allow killing children long after the first trimester. In fact, some allow a woman to kill her baby a day before it's born. So, if you actually believe it's only okay in the first trimester than at least be true to your beliefs and vote against these laws that allow it beyond that point.

People sometimes think they are being kind to women to allow abortion, but babies are not the only victims of abortion. Most women suffer emotional distress the rest of their lives after an abortion. They may suppress it and pretend it's not there, but a mother cannot kill her child without something dying inside of her. And that is something that only Jesus can heal and it begins by admitting that abortion is a sin, not a right.

    2. Agreed. As a Christian I find this post filled with hatred. It is not helpful at all.

    3. Regardless of your personal perspective Merry, the word of God is, and always will be, infallible and without error. No one is getting off the hook from biblical liability because scripture doesn't align itself with what we believe to be true.
What I will say to you is this... whatever it is that you believe to be true about the Bible or God, you better be right.

For, it is by faith and not by sight Merry, that we believe in God and His commands. Thus, ask yourself this question...how did I (meaning you) arrive at the conclusion to believe the way you do about the above Scriptures? What did you use as a filter for your beliefs about abortion?

Maybe it's personal for you because someone you care for had an abortion? Thus, the thought that they sinned against God troubles you?

Regardless of your reasons for how you believe, God yet loves even those who have had an abortion, and He cares greatly for them too... however, God still calls it sin...so does the Bible.

    4. Hi unknown.

This post is a list of Scriptures, the words of God the loving Creator who created you and every other person in their mother's womb. I'm sad that you believe God is hateful.

      He's not.

  3. First trimester: key stages
The first trimester begins on the first day of your last period and lasts until the end of week 12. This means that by the time you know for sure you're pregnant, you might already be five or six weeks pregnant!

A lot happens during these first three months. The fertilised egg rapidly divides into layers of cells and implants in the wall of your womb where it carries on growing. These layers of cells become an embryo, which is what the baby is called at this stage.

During this trimester, your baby grows faster than at any other time. By six weeks, a heartbeat can usually be heard and by the end of week 12, your baby's bones, muscles and all the organs of the body have formed. At this point, your baby looks like a tiny human being and is now called a fetus. He or she will even be practising swallowing!

Life begins the moment the two cells fuse.
By the time you find out you are pregnant there most probably is already a heart beat.

Life only starts when God Almighty ordained it.

  4. Ty for giving my debates with pro-choicers some back up 🙂

  5. You can tell in a pregnancy test before the baby is even formed that you will have a child so I really don't understand why people want to debate that. And it is murder because you are taking a life and scripture is against that. I understand that it maybe confusing because in the bible God did kill people including kids but were the people corrupt like when Noah had to build the ark? We don't understand everything that Gos does but I do know he works everything firnthe greater good

    1. Yes, Cassie. You make some good points and let me add this to what you've said. Sometimes people compare God taking a life to human beings taking a life, but there's no comparison. God knows every detail and every thought about every human being and He has a right to give and take life. He has given us standards for judging people who murder and some of those standards can involve a death penalty, but that is never up to one individual to decide and it doesn't apply to an innocent child.
As you've pointed out, the pro-abortion stand denies science as well as Scripture.
