Jesus Has Street Cred - Hebrews 2:10-18

"Street Cred" means having an understanding of the challenges of life. And Hebrews 2:10-18 offers an interesting insight.

Street cred: Commanding a level of respect in an urban environment due to experience in or knowledge of issues affecting those environments ~ Urban Dictionary

When my husband and I did Christian work in Budapest, the advice we valued most came from local missionaries. Lots of folks had wisdom, but these folks had "street cred." They not only loved the Hungarian people, they understood the cultural challenges we'd face.

I thought of this term when reading Hebrews 2:

"Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death" (v. 14).

Jesus needed to become human in order to die for our sins, and that gave Him street cred because "it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God" (v. 17).

And we have full assurance that no matter what we face, He can be our help and comfort. "Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested" (v. 18).

In addition, we know that He came willingly, giving up His rights out of love and compassion for us (Philippians 2:5-11).

No matter what we are going through, no matter what challenges we face, Jesus understands and He can help!

Hebrews 2:14-18: "Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying. We also know that the Son did not come to help angels; he came to help the descendants of Abraham. Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people. Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested."

  1. Wow! 'He walked in our shoes, faced our temptations, lived in our bodies".
I know this, but sometimes it is wonderful to hear it again, again . . . we only have a mere inkling of knowing how very blessed we are. Thank you :)
