Understanding God's Definition of "Love"

After commending the faith of the Philippians, Paul explains his prayer for them: 

 

“And this is my prayer: that your 💙 love 💙 may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. Philippians 1:9-11

This is such an important key to true growth in Christ: love based on biblical knowledge and Spirit-led discernment. 

Love has one meaning to the Christian and quite another to the unsaved world. Worldly love is based on feelings and desires, and it often leads to lust and selfishness. Christian love is based on biblical truth and God’s purposes, and it leads to holiness, sacrifice, and contentment.

In countless ways, worldly pressures have silenced or compromised Christian values. “Judge not” is the battle cry as people watch their loved ones march toward Hell. 

But back to Paul’s prayer.

We find the true meaning of love in God’s Word. It sharpens our discernment. It guides and directs our lives. It’s a love with godly values, unafraid to speak truth even if it causes persecution. 

So let’s daily teach ourselves about love by reading and studying God’s Word, dear Christians. Let’s love as God loves, in spirit and in truth.
