What Lost Keys Tell Us About Seeking God

Jeremiah 29:13 says: “You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.”

Recently, this verse has become my favorite. I am amazed that the almighty and most holy God makes Himself available to mortal people—that He allows Himself to be found. Yet we cannot find Him if we seek Him casually. We must seek Him with “all our heart.”

 

But what does that really look like?

I was discussing it with a friend, and he shared a simple, powerful illustration. He compared seeking God to searching for something extremely valuable that was lost.

He said: “Imagine you are looking for your lost keys. You desperately need them—you truly want to find them. You would not walk into the room, glance left and right, and then give up. You would search every corner, every hidden place, every drawer and closet, under and behind every object until you found them, because they are so important to you.”

Jesus told two parables about how we should pursue and cherish the Kingdom of Heaven. One was about a hidden treasure, the other was about a precious pearl. In both cases, it was so important and valuable to the men who found them that they sold everything they had to obtain them.

God is not far from any of us (Acts 17:25-27). He wants us to seek Him wholeheartedly: passionately, earnestly, and persistently. If you have never sought Him the way described in this illustration, begin today—and you will find Him.
