Years ago, I memorized the whole book of Philippians. I admit I can’t recite it word-for-word anymore, but it's still hidden in my heart (Psalm 119:11).
Unique things about Philippians:
1. Paul wrote it while in prison, yet he repeatedly talks about joy and rejoicing. For example: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” Philippians 4:4
2. It “contains some of the most precise theology (specifically, Christology) in all the Bible (Phil. 2:5-11). It contains one of the clearest and most personal explanations of the gospel (Phil. 3:1-11), as well as the manifold outworkings of the gospel (Phil. 3:12-4:9)” (source).
3. It offers an excellent example of Christian love and concern for God’s people (Philippians 1:7, 2:17-18; 4:1-3,10-16).
4. It contains a passage, Philippians 2:5-11, which many scholars believe was a church hymn.
Several passages in Philippians that have been especially meaningful to me:
Several passages in Philippians that have been especially meaningful to me:
Philippians 1:21-26 explains that a wonderful eternity awaits us, so we should use our time here on earth to share the gospel and grow in our faith.
Philippians 2:12-13 tells us to be serious, deliberate, and passionate about growing in our faith.
Philippians 3:7-9 explains that earthly treasures are worth nothing compared to knowing Christ and serving Him.
Philippians 4:8-9 tells us to dwell on the good things in our lives so we can have peace in the midst of difficulties.
Why not read through Philippians this week, make a list of each time Paul mentions joy or rejoicing, and memorize your favorite passage.
