Isaiah 40 is a wonderful chapter about God’s greatness and glory.
God comforts His people by explaining their future. In verse 3 we read a prophecy about John the Baptist and Christ (Matthew 3:3).
Verse 8 talks about the permanent nature of God’s Word, and the verses that follow explain that our Lord will come in both power and in gentleness as our Shepherd.
The chapter emphasizes the everlasting might and power and wisdom of our Creator God. And the last verse, verse 31, is perhaps the most quoted verse in the chapter:
“They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” KJV
The Hebrew word qavah (קָוָה) means “to wait, to look for, to hope, to expect.” It's translated “those who hope” or “those who trust” in some Bible translations.
But I like the KJV's “they that wait” because it's hopeful waiting, waiting that trusts that God will do what He says. It’s not sitting down and doing nothing. It’s like a servant “waiting on” his master's needs as he waits for his master's promises.
Isaiah 40 prophesied the coming of our Lord, and He has come and saved us. But we continue to wait for the fullness of His kingdom. So today and every day, let's renew our strength by humbly waiting upon our Lord serving Him willingly and faithfully.
