The other day when driving home from Kansas City, my husband got distracted and we came dangerously close to a collision.
Afterward, he said it was a good illustration of the spiritual dangers we face when we fail to stay alert.
So true! We have an enemy who loves distracting us from the things of God:
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8
We must be alert to pray effectively:
“Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” Ephesians 6:18
We must be watchful, aware of temptations and false teachings:
“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” Colossians 4:2
Lots of Christians are “falling asleep at the wheel”:
“So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober.” 1 Thessalonians 5:6
As we ride through life on the narrow road (Matthew 7:13-14), we stay alert by trusting God's Word, seeking God in prayer, and avoiding the devil's schemes.
Let's do it!
