We must be aware that we have an enemy.
He wants to "steal and kill and destroy" (John 10:10). That's why we must "be alert and of sober mind" because he's "like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8).
He's the deceiver of the world (Revelation 12:9).
He has "blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel" (2 Corinthians 4:4). And until/unless they are saved, they remain under His control (1 John 5:19).
Those who reject Jesus are carrying out the desires of their father, the devil, who is the father of lies. I love how Jesus expresses this: "When [Satan] lies, he speaks his native language" (John 8:44).
Sadly, Satan convinces people that right is wrong and wrong is right.
He disguises himself as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). That's how he inspires pride in the sins which do the greatest damage to people's souls.
But now for the good news—we don't fight our enemy on our own! We have God's Spirit:
