The Concise Description of the Gospel in Romans 1

In Romans 1:16-17 Paul gives us a challenge to be unashamed of the gospel.* And he also gives a concise but powerful description of the gospel: 

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: 'The righteous will live by faith.'" 

Paul is about to discuss the unrighteous acts of those who reject God, and he wants to contrast this with the righteousness of God and His true followers.

We’re not saved because we’re righteous. But when we are saved, we begin rejecting our ungodly desires and transforming our hearts and minds with God's righteousness (Ephesians 4:17-24). Most importantly—we let God define right and wrong. We don't bend to the ever-changing opinions of our culture. 

Romans 1:16-32 addressed the sinful cultures surrounding the early church, and nothing has changed. The same sins that destroyed their souls are destroying souls today. And the same Savior who saved their souls is saving souls today (Hebrews 13:8)!

I am not ashamed of the gospel!
