He Sent Us Out Like Sheep Among Wolves: Matthew 10:16

This 1-minute devotion explains why Jesus said, “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves."

In Matthew 10:16, Jesus said, “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.”

Sheep among wolves means innocent persons in the midst of powerful, vicious enemies.

Think of the wonderful healing ministry of Christ and His disciples. Even if a person disagreed with His teachings, no one could fault His good works. But He was hated—the Lamb of God in the midst of Satan's vicious wolves.

People show their ignorance when they say that Christians will be loved if we act like Jesus. The opposite is true. Jesus was hated "without reason," and we will be as well (John 15:18-25).

Satan plants weeds in our midst so the world will judge us by his fake Christian wolves and ignore the genuine Christians who do great good and share truth lovingly. Add these weeds to the rest of Satan's forces and we understand why so many people are deceived (2 Timothy 3:12-13).

But "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved," so let's prepare our hearts and minds to stand firm (Romans 10:13; Ephesians 6:10-12). The love of Jesus is worth every hardship we face!
