3 Ways to Identify a Fool

The Book of Proverbs offers practical wisdom to help us avoid foolishness.

The book of Proverbs is practical, powerful, and personal. And it gives us multiple warnings about foolishness.

For example:

1. Fools spurn biblical advice and follow popular errors.

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 1:7

The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice. Proverbs 12:15

“The discerning heart seeks knowledge, but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly.” Proverbs 15:14

See also: Proverbs 10:21, Proverbs 17:24, Proverbs 23:9, and Half-Truths Many Christians Believe.

2. Fools bring their parents sorrow.

“A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.” Proverbs 10:1

Also: Proverbs 17:21, Proverbs 17:25, and Honoring Parents.

3. Fools are always spouting foolishness.

“The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin.” Proverbs 10:8

“The tongue of the wise adorns knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly.” Proverbs 15:2

“Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their own opinions.” Proverbs 18:2

See also: Proverbs 10:14, Proverbs 13:16, Proverbs 18:6, and Christian Speech.

Fools are easy prey for false teachings. They forfeit the blessings God promises for honoring parents (Ephesians 6:2-3). But they remain incredibly confident and outspoken in their foolishness!

Proverbs encourages us to examine our hearts and avoid foolishness. Let's do that!

  1. Sometimes I see myself in a way I feel so convicted. Proverbs 18:2 makes me hang my head in shame. I never really felt the Proverb speaking the of the son bringing a Father joy and
the Mother grief related to me. I do understand this now. Does the son know he has grieved Mother ?
