⮚ A woman has annoying parents. You assume that’s why she treats them without respect.
⮚ A man had a bad childhood. You assume that’s why he steals.
⮚ A couple has a bad church experience. You assume that’s why they turn from their faith.
If you made those assumptions, you’d be wrong.
Why do I say that? Because some people with annoying parents treat them with respect. Some people with a bad childhood don’t steal. Some people who endure a bad church experience remain faithful.
Sin is always a choice. We sin because we decide to sin. We can’t blame our sins on anyone or anything.
We can’t even blame them on Satan.
Satan wants to take believers captive, and he wants to blind the minds of unbelievers (2 Timothy 2:26; 2 Corinthians 4:4). But unbelievers have no excuse for rejecting God and sinning (Romans 1:20).
And Christians not only have no excuse, we have a promise that God will provide a way out when Satan tempts us (1 Corinthians 10:13).
So let’s remember the warning and promise of 1 John 1:8-10:
"If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us."
