Self-pity Destroys

Self-pity is a destructive trap. This 1-minute devotion offers 3 biblical ways to overcome it, all from the book of Philippians.

I personally know a woman whose husband attempted to murder her, a family that has a serious hereditary disease, a friend who lives in daily physical pain. And all of these people have refused to live in self-pity.

In contrast, I know people who get completely wrapped up in their problems and wallow in the negatives. In fact, some of these people create their problems and then blame others for the consequences.

I wish I could say that I’ve never been in this second group, but I have.

However, I've refused to live there.

Self-pity destroys us if we don’t move past it. We lose our perspective and become critical and self-centered. We also lose the respect of others and miss opportunities God has for us.

So how do we overcome it? Try this:

1. Each morning recite Philippians 2:1-8 and ask God who you can bless.

2. Each afternoon recite Philippians 3:12-14 and ask God to help you move forward.

3. Each evening recite Philippians 4:8 and count your blessings.

If you’re feeling sorry for yourself, please don’t live there!

  1. Amen, self pity can be just as debilitating as any other affliction.

  2. It's hard when your pet dies. I tried everything but it wasn't meant to be. I do wonder if I felt sorry for myself then. Now I know my pets are taken care of by God. That makes me happy now.
