What does it mean to be holy?

“Holier than thou” 
“Holy rollers”
“Holy moly!” 
“Holy communion.”

The word holy is used a number of ways, but the Greek word used in the Bible is hagios. It means “different”— set apart from the world and dedicated to God. 

“Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written [Leviticus 11:44]: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” 1 Peter 1:13-16

Holiness requires:
1. Being alert spiritually.
Awake, alert, clear-minded (1 Thessalonians 5:4-8). 

2. Setting our hope on our salvation.
Hope produces faith and love (Colossians 1:4-5). 

3. Refusing to conform to ungodly pressures.
Renewing our minds so we understand God's will (Romans 12:2).

Let’s be alert, salvation-focused non-conformists, building ourselves up in holiness (Jude 1:20).
