8 Ways to Be the Light of Christ in a Dark World

Scripture says Christians were once darkness and now are light, but we need to learn to live as light. This 1-minute devotion offers 8 ways we can do that. #Devotions #BibleLoveNotes #Bible

In Sunday school we sang “This little light of mine,” based on Scriptural commands to shine like lights in our dark world, glorifying God with good deeds (Matthew 5:16), and living clean, innocent lives (Philippians 2:15).

As a child, I thought being light simply meant being good and treating everyone nicely. But Ephesians 5:8-20 gives us a fuller definition of our role as lights:

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth).”

1. Finding out what pleases the Lord (v.10).

2. Avoiding and exposing evil (v.11).

See Being Light and Salt in a Sexually Immoral Culture.

3. Refusing to talk about evil things (v.12).*

4. Being careful how we live (v. 15).

5. Taking advantage of opportunities God gives us (v. 16).

6. Being self-controlled (v.18).

7. Constantly reminding each other of God’s Word in conversations and worship (v.19).

8. Being continually thankful (v.20).

* This doesn’t mean that we refuse to talk about the evil going on in our world – Scripture does that. It means we don’t romanticize, approve, condone, enjoy, joke about or entertain ourselves with evil. We don’t cuss or use unwholesome speech (Ephesians 4:29).
