5 Ways God Helps Us Overcome Bad Memories

Starting with some incredible facts about the brain of a chickadee, this 1-minute devotion offers 5 ways God helps us overcome bad memories.

God's creation is amazing.

Research shows that chickadees' brains grow in late summer and early fall in order to remember the hundreds of places they have hidden seeds for the winter. They discard cells with old memories to make room for new cells and new memories. (source)

Sometimes I wish I had that ability so I could get rid of bad memories – regrets, sorrows, rejections, hurts…

We don’t discard old memories like chickadees, but those of us who know the Lord experience something better than discarded brain cells.

1. Forgiveness. If we confess our sins, God completely forgives us! Yay!
1 John 1:9

2. Love and comfort. God cares about our pain.
Psalm 56:8; 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3. God’s power and strength so we can move forward.(1)
Philippians 4:13; Ephesians 6:10

4. Peace. Christ gives us peace as we rest in Him and focus on our blessings.
John 14:27; Philippians 4:8-9

5. Hope. One day God will wipe away every tear.
Revelation 21:4

(1) If our desire is to know God better, we will seek to forget the past and press on (Philippians 3:13-14).

  1. My sins come back, but I ask forgiveness again, then I pray to never behave that bad again. I always want to choose to do good. I know I have a choice, I am thankful that God puts in us the ability to choose and His WORD helps us to make the right choice.
